A Poem by Thayne Whipple

Black

Jul 20, 2015
Black is bats up in the sky,
Coal and tar and household fly,
Caves and forests after fires,
Magic hats and tractor tires,
Oil, records, holes in space,
Zebra stripes, a racoon’s face,
Bugs like roaches, beetles, ants,
Horses, sheep, a preacher’s pants,
Burglar's clothes, a bad guy's hat,
Lic’rice vines, unlucky cat,
Bottom of a frying pan,
Or the skin of Kenyan man,
Widow spiders, funny light,
Shade of famous evil knight,
Judge's robe and panthers too,
Puppy's nose and blind man's view.
If more black I want to see
I, outside will run with glee,
On a cloudy moonless night,
Or I'll shut my eyes real tight.
