A Poem by Thayne Whipple

My Dear Jay

Feb 5, 2016
Before my dreams of West Egg fade,
I’ll pen my final thoughts.
Before the setting sun does fall
Beyond the graceful yachts.
Your life was like a shooting star –
So brilliant yet so short.
I wouldn’t be consumed by flames -
And sought a safer port.
How hard you tried to lure me back
With life so fast and free
The dream of any other girl -
But I could only flee.
I might have thought that I could try -
If only for a day -
To join you in your life of dreams
Across the frothy bay.
But as it is – I’m far from there -
I know you won’t reply.
For life is short at such a speed -
A gunshot echoes by.
