A Poem by Thayne Whipple
Preparations for War (Aesop)
Jan 30, 2016
A war throughout the land did tear
Between the beasts and birds of air.
Between the beasts and birds of air.
The lion king his troops did call,
And they did gather – one and all.
And they did gather – one and all.
Great herds of donkeys came that day.
And all the hares did swift obey.
And all the hares did swift obey.
Commanders did the troops review,
But did not know quite what to do …
But did not know quite what to do …
As hares and donkeys do not fight –
And neither were they very bright.
And neither were they very bright.
This to the king, they then did say,
And asked to send them all away.
And asked to send them all away.
The lion was a wiser soul,
And said, “For each we’ll find a role.
And said, “For each we’ll find a role.
The donkeys with their frightful bray
As trumpeters will sound our way.
As trumpeters will sound our way.
The hares will also fill a need,
Relaying messages with speed.
Relaying messages with speed.
And thus the ranks were organized,
And each his talents recognized.
And each his talents recognized.

Each one of us can find a way
To in this life a part to play.
Each one of us can find a way
To in this life a part to play.
