A Poem by Thayne Whipple
The Art of the Fox (Aesop)
Nov 21, 2015
A fox upon the road did stroll.
And as he passed a grassy knoll,
And as he passed a grassy knoll,
A hare did wave and shout, “good day!”
And quizzically went on to say;
And quizzically went on to say;
“In all the wood you stand apart,
As famous for your skillful art.
As famous for your skillful art.
But many of us do not know
What talent caused your fame to grow.”
What talent caused your fame to grow.”
The fox replied with knowing glow;
“My secrets I will gladly show.
“My secrets I will gladly show.
I do appreciate your zeal,
Come join me for a lovely meal.
Come join me for a lovely meal.
Please hop down to my den at nine,
As that is when I plan to dine.
As that is when I plan to dine.
All day the hare prepared with haste
That of the art, might get a taste.
That of the art, might get a taste.
And wanting to appear his best,
The hare arrived fresh cleaned and dressed.
The hare arrived fresh cleaned and dressed.
The table was quite finely set
But food had not been placed there yet.
But food had not been placed there yet.
The fox did then his plan reveal,
The hare, himself, would be the meal.
The hare, himself, would be the meal.
The fox left no one to applaud
His art of cunning and of fraud.
His art of cunning and of fraud.

Should curiosity arise,
Consider also what is wise.
Consider also what is wise.
