A Poem by Thayne Whipple
The Best Escape (Aesop)
Jan 16, 2016
A fox and hare did argue long,
And tried to prove each other wrong,
And tried to prove each other wrong,
About which one could best evade
A hot pursuit by hunter made.
A hot pursuit by hunter made.
The hare did boast about his speed –
That he could outrun hound or steed.
That he could outrun hound or steed.
And how his feet so strong and swift,
Delivered well the needed lift.
Delivered well the needed lift.
The fox then angrily opined;
“The better thing's a clever mind.
“The better thing's a clever mind.
For ‘though your speed is very fast –
As time wears on, you cannot last.
As time wears on, you cannot last.
With trickery I win the day,
To keep my predators away.
To keep my predators away.
And it is known both far and wide
That I can more discreetly hide.
That I can more discreetly hide.
And on they bickered through the night –
Until the sun’s first morning light.
Until the sun’s first morning light.
---
The swiftest may not win the prize,
When facing foes who are more wise.
When facing foes who are more wise.
