A Poem by Thayne Whipple
The Greatest Legacy
Dec 14, 2015
For some, the course they navigate
Is building fortunes vast and great.
And for this monetary goal,
They focus all their mind and soul.
Is building fortunes vast and great.
And for this monetary goal,
They focus all their mind and soul.
And some succeed and treasures leave
For those who at their coffins grieve.
While others at great wealth do fail,
And leave the destitute to wail.
For those who at their coffins grieve.
While others at great wealth do fail,
And leave the destitute to wail.
But greatest is the legacy
Of those who served quite happily;
Who minister to poor and sick,
And friends remain through thin and thick.
Of those who served quite happily;
Who minister to poor and sick,
And friends remain through thin and thick.
Who cling to what they know is true
And always seek the higher view.
And 'though it's not their only quest,
Oft' times with riches they are blessed.
And always seek the higher view.
And 'though it's not their only quest,
Oft' times with riches they are blessed.
Which they apply most willingly
To acts of generosity -
Pursuing causes most worthwhile,
They share their comfort and a smile.
To acts of generosity -
Pursuing causes most worthwhile,
They share their comfort and a smile.
But either way, I would maintain,
We should remember this refrain:
It's not the stuff we leave behind.
It's what we've done for humankind.
We should remember this refrain:
It's not the stuff we leave behind.
It's what we've done for humankind.
